Jagalchi Korean Market, the first of its kind in the United States, opened its flagship store in Daly City, California, in early 2025. The store serves as both a retail destination and a cultural hub, giving shoppers an immersive experience in Korean food culture. Henderson Engineers and Henderson Building Solutions supported the project with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, and commissioning services.
The team designed and installed several specialized systems. A new CO2 refrigeration system improves energy efficiency and reduces environmental impact. A customized HVAC system manages humidity levels to protect perishable items. Crews also overhauled the electrical service and distribution within the former retail facility to support the store’s increased demand. New plumbing systems handle water, waste, and grease management needs. Wireless lighting controls give the client flexibility and help reduce energy use, and a desiccant-based dehumidification system maintains precise environmental conditions. Web-based refrigeration and HVAC monitoring allow the client to manage operations remotely from South Korea, which helps maintain consistency across locations.
Coordinating the installation of specialized kitchen equipment was essential to store operations. Sustainability also guided the design. The low GWP refrigeration system reduced the store’s environmental impact, and the high-efficiency HVAC system, advanced lighting controls, and full electrification support energy savings and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
The project is seen as a cultural milestone for the San Francisco region. Teams from Korea and the United States worked together to create a central gathering place that celebrates Asian culture and cuisine.
