Acute care hospital, HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood, has been serving the greater Houston community with high-quality and cost-effective healthcare for nearly three decades. Kingwood recently found themselves in need of infrastructure upgrades due to aging equipment in a variety of locations as a result of  years of piece-by-piece additions, as well as the fact that the building was originally a mall with very different infrastructure needs than a hospital. That, in addition to the desire to keep the hospital running as efficient as possible for the safety and health of patients and staff, is why Kingwood hired Henderson Building Solutions to spearhead their upgrades.

This hospital serves the community with critical care, separate emergency rooms for children and adults, three patient towers, surgery suites, orthopedics, labor delivery and NICU, rehabilitation services, administrative offices, and more. The building systems were previously supported by two utility plants (south and north), and Kingwood needed a more centralized solution. The first phase consisted of erecting a new building adjacent to the south plant to relocate the two 300-ton north plant chillers. This new central utility plant allowed for a central location for the chillers and will allow the two plants (south and new) to be completely integrated in the future. The old north utility plant was then converted into a boiler plant for a new loop on the roof. To support the boiler plant, gas service to the building was also upgraded.

Unique to the project, 7,000 linear feet of Aquatherm loop was installed on the roof to initiate a change of over 152 DX units to chilled water. To support this loop and the necessary increased water capacity, Henderson Building also installed a new chilled water tower and two new tankless hot water heaters. We integrated all the new controls into the building automation system (BAS) which will help with total demand flow for the central utility plant in the future.

A huge undertaking and highly coordinated effort, the three-phase project involved massive equipment shuffles, demolition, and new construction. The favorable Texas-weather allowed Henderson Building to complete this project and its necessary shutdowns without the use of temporary equipment. Boasted as the top hospital in the area, we are proud to have helped upgrade Kingwood’s facilities, and in turn, care for the surrounding community.
