Nationally recognized for academic excellence, the Olathe Public Schools District is the second largest district in Kansas with nearly 30,000 students. When they added a fifth high school to their district, they partnered with the Henderson Building Solutions team to provide commissioning and ongoing building monitoring.
Results from energy modeling efforts early in the design process informed a design consisting of sustainable systems that were later integrated into an ongoing building monitoring system. Together with our parent company, Henderson Engineers, we helped the district maximize its investment in the facility with this system. Producing live reports on the facility’s electricity, gas, and water usage, the building monitoring system provides better control of the building’s systems, more accurate and timely performance data, and the opportunity for early detection of issues. Even more, real time analytics from the facility’s monitoring system are integrated into the curriculum of the school’s Green Technology Academy, a program that equips our future thought leaders with the tools to learn the importance of energy efficient technology. Allowing the students to have a hand in their everyday environment, the monitoring system was designed by Henderson Engineers and is backed by Henderson Building Solutions field technicians.
Building upon a goal of unparalleled energy savings, the Henderson team worked with the school to create and manage a building schedule. The high school was designed with the rapidly growing surrounding population in mind, so when the school first opened its doors for the school year, only 3/4 of the building was occupied. With the help of our team, the Olathe Public Schools facility staff was able to schedule certain parts of the building to match varying usage not only for the school year, but customized for each individual day the building was occupied.
