Overland Park Regional Medical Center is a 343-bed, acute medical care facility and Level 1 Trauma Center. The campus is comprised of four medical office buildings and two pharmacies. In the 37 years since OPRMC began serving Johnson County and the surrounding areas, the facility has aged, prompting the owner, HCA Midwest to call their friends at Henderson Building Solutions.

Comfort complaints led to a more in-depth investigation of mechanical system capabilities. The initial project assessment showed a lack of sufficient cooling and reheat capability was caused by increased load due campus growth. Site visits confirmed many damper controls were inoperable and the air-cooling equipment was not connected to emergency power.

Henderson designed a new system that provides adequate cooling capacity and connected it to the emergency power system. The new mechanical set-up is complete with VAV reheat terminals and DDC controls, increased airflow through supply/return ductwork. Because this new system would be housed in the current mechanical room, Henderson coordinated with the equipment supplier to confirm the new equipment was double the airflow capacity and sized to fix the space.

The system services a laboratory that needed to maintain functionality throughout construction. By isolating various offices and testing stations and coordinating with the project team the unit was replaced in a continuous 48-hour period.  Additionally, the lab remained operational during the entire project.
